Glimmer’s work in Ethiopia is expanding through a five-year initiative funded by the IKEA Foundation. The partnership will support Glimmer’s approach to lifting entire communities out of poverty through the transformative impact of clean water, quality education, health care and microfinance opportunities.

“We are very impressed by the integrated community development model that Glimmer has developed over the past 15 years,” said Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation. “Through our partnership, we expect great impact and better opportunities for thousands of children, while helping communities become stronger and better able to overcome the harsh conditions of rural life. This is why we are supporting A Glimmer of Hope’s work with a $7 million grant to improve life for women and children in rural Ethiopia.”

The IKEA Foundation will fund Glimmer’s holistic projects in a community of 70,000 people in rural Ethiopia. This effort will play an important role in continuing to advance the remarkable achievements in poverty reduction taking place in Ethiopia today.

“The IKEA Foundation’s vision aligns with Glimmer’s focus on empowering women and girls, and building resilience in partnership with the people of rural Ethiopia,” said Donna Berber, CEO of A Glimmer of Hope. “We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our commitment to the global movement to eradicate poverty.”

About the IKEA Foundation

The IKEA Foundation aims to improve opportunities for children and youth in the world’s poorest communities by funding holistic, long-term programmes that can create substantial, lasting change. The Foundation works with strong strategic partners applying innovative approaches to achieve large-scale results in four fundamental areas of a child’s life: a place to call home; a healthy start in life; a quality education; and sustainable family income. Currently-funded programmes benefit an estimated 100 million children by 2015. Learn more at
