Reserve Golf Club: Water for Tercha 2010 - 2011
In 2009 members of the Reserve Golf Club came together to support a water project in southern Ethiopia in the village of Dali. In the process it transformed the lives of many people there. My son, Jeff, and I had a chance to see this first hand during our recent travel to Ethiopia in late September, early October. It was overwhelming in many ways and quite emotional. In the end it was very satisfying to see the impact our little golfing community could have on people desperately in need and continents away from our day to day lives. Thank you to all who participated. This year we are hoping to fund another water project, this one in Tercha town, located in the same region of southern Ethiopia as the community of Dali. Currently, one of the main water sources for the people of Tercha is an unprotected spring just a short walk from the middle of town. The spring gathers into dirty puddles that the people then use to collect their water. The puddles not only serve as the drinking water for the community, but for the animals as well. During our recent visit as a woman was filling her jug with water, about five oxen came into the water at the same time and started drinking. This water is no doubt disease and parasite ridden and not fit for drinking. Over 250,000 people in Ethiopia die each year due to water borne illnesses. The gift of clean water to these people of Tercha has a dramatic effect, espcecially to the women who fetch the water, who sometimes have to walk significant distances while carrying their young children. They have no other option but to give this water to their children to drink, even though they realize that in doing so it could make them sick. We have a wonderful opportunity to make an impact for the people of Tercha. It continues to be true that we cannot help everyone in need but we can certainly change the lives of the people of Tercha for the better. Please join your fellow golfers and support the Reserve Golf Club water project for 2010. Thank you for your support and may God richly bless you.
