Bring Clean Water to Gonok!
Glimmer is taking on our most challenging water project to date in Gonok, Ethiopia. Join us by donating to this project or by creating your own fundraising team! You’ll be a part of an amazing project that will change lives in Gonok.
Located atop a steep valley in the arid, mountainous Tigray region, Gonok is home to farming families that rely on poor quality water collected from deep gorges far from the village. Women and girls make a treacherous 45-minute walk multiple times each day to the water source. The small stream where they collect water is dirty and contaminated with livestock waste. The lack of access to clean water leaves families in Gonok vulnerable to disease and illness, and time spent collecting water keeps girls out of school.
With the current water table more than 100 meters beneath the surface, we will need to drill a very deep borehole and then install a solar panel system to power the pumping of water uphill. When the project is complete, a reservoir and a large system of pipeline will feed nine community water points where families can collect clean water close to home.
