Glimmer's assessment team recently visited the existing schools in the Villages of Gondar. We found them in varying states of disrepair, some leaning dangerously and others crumbling. Students crowd together at the few available desks, or else sit on the mud floor. Books are in short supply — in many cases a single book is shared by four or more students.

The community values education, but its residents are poor. Using available materials like mud and sticks, they do the best they can to build schools where their children can learn. Classrooms are small, dusty and dark. There is no electricity for artificial light and, with few windows, it's difficult to see the blackboard.

Over the next five years, Glimmer will build new school blocks, libraries and academic buildings to serve these communities. We will also provide much-needed supplies like desks, chairs and books for students.
